From Ballet Slippers to Soccer Cleats: My First Brush with the MVP Fallacy
At 14, I was living two lives. In the studio I was the “perfect” dancer, graceful, disciplined, flawless. On the field I was the new kid, bruised knees, late start, trying to keep up with teammates who had played since kindergarten.
My ballet teacher forced the issue:
“You can’t come back with bruises. Pick one: dance or soccer.”
I quit dance the next day.
What I didn’t quit was pressure. Overnight I went from star performer to rookie, convinced everyone else had a head start I could never close. I had speed, agility, and a hunger to compete, yet my confidence wavered because I judged myself against athletes with a decade more experience.
That identity shock is exactly what today’s high‑school MVPs face when they reach college. I call it the MVP Fallacy: the belief that past dominance guarantees future success, until reality delivers a wake‑up call.
If I had a mental performance coach back then, I would have seen that my ballet discipline was an asset, not a liability. Instead, I learned the hard way, and THAT experience ignited MY PURPOSE.
• Mentored hundreds of NCAA & high‑school standouts through performance slumps, identity crises, and scholarship pressure.
• Built the MVP Mindset Framework (Mindset • Values • Process) : a system that pairs mental skills with physical reps so athletes show up with the whole game, not just half of it.
• Watched “can’t‑miss” recruits lose their edge and watched them bounce back to become Conference Players of the Year once they trained the mental side.
•I've lived the fallacy. I know what it feels like to go from “best in class” to “just another number.”
• I speak athlete and parent. Seventeen years in higher education means I understand the coach’s office, the locker room and your kitchen table conversations at 10 p.m. after a rough game.
• My results last. Athletes leave with repeatable routines, a resilient identity, and the confidence to thrive long after the season ends.
To make sure your star athlete never loses their spark when the competition gets real, so the four years you’ve worked so hard for become a launchpad, not a letdown.
